As a wedding suit and dress designer, I see the same thing happen again and again. A marrier will try on a custom wedding look, see themselves in the mirror, and say “Wow! This looks really good.” They think it’s the clothes doing all the work but guess what? It’s not It’s them. For once, they’re wearing something that fits properly. That moment — when a marrier sees themselves more clearly (often for the very first time in their adult life) — is one of the best parts of my job. I love designing suits and dresses that enhance, not distract, from who’s wearing it. I tailor each piece just right so you can actually see the person. What a novel idea, right?

Sometimes people don’t know where to start with custom design. You might be like many of my Chicago clients who feel like they actually have “too many” ideas. A good designer can take all that inspiration and refine it into a cohesive piece. Finding someone with experience doing that for trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people is so important. Communication is key when it comes to finding a designer to help you navigate all of your ideas. You’ll need to share your initial ideas but also collaborate throughout the custom design process. When you’re picking a designer, remember that results aren’t the only thing worth looking at. You can interview them on their process. Ask them how they include clients, so you can feel confident you’ll get the custom wedding suit of your dreams.
